Abstract

Vaginal atresia is a rare congenital anomaly presenting with abdominal mass and related symptoms of compression at the newborn period or may face us by abdominal swelling and lack of menstruation in the adolescent period. A one day old girl was admitted to our clinic with a diagnosis of intraabdominal cystic mass or ovarian cyst which was detected intrauterinely. On the physical examination, patient’s vaginal opening was not present. Evaluation by USG showed a cystic mass belonging to uterus and dilated cervix and a portion of vajina proximal to the vaginal atresia. Surgical judgement is made relating to the level of the vaginal atresia following the diagnosis. Repair by perineal approach is possible in distally placed cases. However proximal ın the placed atresia cases an initial drainage procedure followed by an abdomino-perineal repair might be the choice either on a separate session or in the same session as in our presented case
