Abstract

Objective: Nutrition-related behaviours in young children develop via the relationship with the care-giver and almost always depend on the mutual relationship and interaction. The aim of this study was to develop a reliable and valid scale to evaluate the feelings, thoughts and approaches related with the maternal feeding process in the mothers of children aged 9-72 months.

Material and Methods: The research was conducted in 26 kindergartens and one Family Health Center in Ankara with the participant mothers of children aged 9-72 months. Factor analysis, internal consistency coefficients, correlations, comparisons of the difference between the high and low 27% groups, t test for independent groups, and experts judgments were used to investigate the validity and reliability of the scale developed within the scope of the study.

Results: The data of 529 girls (%47.2) and 592 boys (% 52.8) and a total of 1121 mothers of healthy children were included in analysis. The maternal age range was 18-48 years (X = 34.87±4.78 years). The scale produced five factors: “Negative Affect During Meal”, “Attitudes about Insufficient/Unbalanced Feeding”, “Negative Feeding Strategies”,“Forced Feeding”, and “Reaction to the Viewpoints of Others”. The total explained variances was 56.49%, The Cronbach Alpha coefficient was 0.91 and test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.94. The Mean differences between the high-low 27% groups were significant at p<0.001 for the scale. The factor structures of the scale were confirmed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis.

Conclusion: The results revealed that the 27-item scale is valid and reliable.
