Abstract

There has been major progress in the understanding of iron metabolism in recent years due to the discovery of proteins playing a role in iron absorption and its release from the enterocyte and macrophages. However the most important discovery was the identifi cation of hepcidin, currently considered to be the “iron hormone”. Disorders of iron homeostasis are among the most common disorders of humans. This review discusses normal iron metabolism together with iron defi ciency and iron overload disorders with recent insights into their pathophysiology in the latest literature
