Abstract
Objective: The use of tobacco and alcohol has increased, especially during adolescence, and the starting age has decreased in our society. The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of smoking and alcohol use and to determine the influencing factors.
Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 500 primary education and high school students were evaluated. Sociodemographic characteristics and the smoking and drinking habits of students were determined through interviews.results: The mean age of study group was 14.42 +1.72 years and 50%were male. Tobacco and alcohol use rates were 6.2%and 6%of the students respectively. Both use of alcohol and smoking was more frequent in boys than in girls. 61.3%of the students who used tobacco were over 17 years old and 50%of the students who used alcohol were aged 14-16 years. Smoking and alcohol use was more frequent in children with better economic conditions. The use of both tobacco and alcohol was more frequent among children whose parents had received education for less than 8 years. However, these differences were not statistically significant.conclusion: Smoking and alcohol use is a significant problem among elementary and high school students. Students and their families should be provided training in order to prevent the increase in the use
