Abstract
Objective: We conducted this study in order to detect seropositivity rates of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae in cases with community-acquired childhood pneumonia.
Material and Methods: A total of 150 children who had been referred to the Adana Numune Education and Research Hospital Child Policlinic due to respiratory system infections and who were previously healthy and had not used antibiotics until 48 hours before the consultation and were hospitalized with a diagnosis of Community-Acquired Pneumonia were included in the study. Patients’ ages ranged from 3 months to 15 years. At the time of evaluation, the symptoms, vital findings, height and weight percentile values, and detailed physical examination findings were recorded. Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae serologies were studied with micro Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay using approximately 3 μl of blood remaining from the blood taken for other tests the evaluation. Posterior-anterior chest radiography was performed for all patients during hospitalization.
Results: In our study on cases with Community-Acquired childhood Pneumonia, we identified the Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM positivity rate as 9.3% and mean age as 78.71 months; the Chlamydia pneumoniae IgM positivity rate was 2%, and the mean age was 21.66 months. Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM positivity displayed a positive correlation with increasing age.
Conclusion: Pneumonias have the highest rate among the reasons of hospitalization. Among the cases with community-acquired pneumonia, the Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae seropositivity rate was detected to be consistent with the literature data. Atypical agents are thought to be play a significant role in patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia. In cases of suspected atypical pneumonia, appropriate tests must be done and macrolide therapy must be started. The use of advanced diagnostic methods has an important place in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
