Abstract

Objective: Urethral trauma is a very rare type of trauma with a difficult treatment process. In our study; we aimed to discuss the retrospective evaluation of our patients with traumatic injuries to the urethra and bladder neck with a literature review.

Material and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the age, gender, mechanism of trauma, direct presentation to our clinic, localisation of the injury, additional injury and surgical treatment information in twelve patients (one girl, eleven boys) with urethra and bladder neck injury due to trauma between 2009 and 2014.

Results: The mean age was 9.1±3.7 years . There was an urethral stricture due to a traffic accident in eight cases, fall injury in two cases, gunshot wound in one case, and industrial accident in one case. The injury was in the posterior urethra in seven, in the bladder neck in one and in the penile urethra in four cases. Three of the patients with posterior urethral injury had presented to us first, but four patients were initially operated at another center. The patient with bladder neck injury had been operated on at another center but referred to our hospital because of continuing drainage. We repaired the anterior side of the bladder. All three patients with posterior urethral injury were operated at least twice at another center and referred with urethral stricture. While two of the cases were reoperated, one of them had spontaneous urination with internal urethrotomy and dilation. A patient who directly presented to our center was treated with endoscopic catheterization and dilation. The other case healed with the use of buccal mucosa
