Abstract
Objective: Vitamins are organic compounds that are catalyze important reactions in the cell in very small amounts but are not made in the body. A healthy mother’s milk contains all the vitamins except for vitamin D. Vitamin D should be recommended to all newborn infants in order to prevent diseases resulting from vitamin deficiency. In this study we investigate the frequency of vitamin use in Yozgat.
Material and Methods: Our subjects were the relatives of 750 patients aged 0-24 months who were brought to the Yozgat Birth and Children’s Hospital outpatient clinic.
Results: Of the 750 patients, 352 (50.2%) had never used vitamins and 348 (49.7%) had used vitamins. The vitamin users were distributed as 158 (45.3%) users of multivitamin, 75 (21.5%) vitamin D, and 115 (33.2%) vitamin D and multivitamin. Vitamin use was regular in 228 (65.5%) and intermittent in 120 (34.4%) subjects. Half of the patients presenting at our clinic used vitamins, but only 65% used them regularly.conclusion: We found the use of vitamins to be low in Yozgat during the period of this study. Despite all the efforts in this regard, vitamin D deficiency and prophylaxis continue to be important issues
