Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge of preschool teachers about common infections, clinical interventions in children with chronic diseases, and situations requiring first aid frequently seen in children.
Material and Methods: An open-ended, face-to-face questionnaire was administered to the private preschool teachers of 3- to 6-year-old children in Ankara. The teachers’ knowledge and skills about health and common emergency situations were assessed.results: One hundred and seventeen preschool teachers (mean age: 26.5±4.9 years) were included in this study. While 78.6% of teachers had graduated from university or college, 21% had graduated from high school. Sixty seven percent of teachers had received health education but 86% of them thought that the education was not sufficient. Most of the participating teachers knew about severe situations concomitant with fever and clinical evidence of food poisoning. They also knew how to intervene in seizure, burns, bleeding, foreign object in the eye, sprains, fracture and electric shock. Only half of them knew how to correctly measure fever and intervene in fever, and less than half of the participants knew how to intervene in hypoglycemia and aspiration. Teachers that had received health education were more informed than the others on the subjects of hypoglycemia, epistaxis, foreign body in the eye and sprains.conclusion: We think that teachers felt incompetent because of lack of practice even when they knew the correct .
